ऐसी मान्यता है कि आषाढ़ शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी को देवशयनी एकादशी होती है, जब भगवान श्री हरि विष्णु क्षीरसागर में 4 माह के शयन के लिए चले जाते हैं। इन चार महिनों के दौरान कोई भी शुभ कार्य नहीं किया जाता. शादी विवाह नहीं होता है. देवउठनी एकादशी को भगवान विष्णु के जागने के साथ ही मांगलिक और शुभ कार्यों की शुरुआत हो जाती है।
